Salesforce.com’s New Database.com a Game Changer
In a keynote speech at the 2010 Dreamforce event, Salesforce.com’s CEO, Marc Benioff announced to the 14,000 attendees that “databases are moving to the cloud” and that this will change the market. While not an entirely new concept in the world of cloud computing, it is new positioning from SalesForce and Force.com and is significant for the public sector. This new product is called Database.com.
It is significant because Database.com is o
pen to any developer on any platform (see overview in video below). Database.com will offer an infrastructure for enterprise apps to deliver updates and information in real-time. Developers can write their applications in Java, C#, Ruby, PHP or more and can run their apps anywhere – on Force.com, VMforce, Amazon EC2, Google AppEngine, Microsoft Azure or Heroku. Apps can also run natively on any device, like an iPad, an iPhone, Android or Blackberry. (source: TechCrunch)
This new product changes the market for developers as well as for the competition. Salesforce.com is challenging Oracle’s database leadership and challenging Microsoft’s cloud movement. As written by Denis Pombriant, “This announcement is a direct challenge to Microsoft’s cloud aspirations, which include its database. So this could get interesting.” (source: CRMBuyer)
At BasicGov, Database.com opens up new and exciting opportunities for products. It also opens up opportunities for cities that have development capabilities to build applications in and around BasicGov modules. We encourage our clients to tell us what they want to see for 2011. We are still absorbing this major announcement and are likely to share some new product plans in the new year that result from this “game changer” announcement.
